Pool Cleaning – The Four Steps to a Consistently Sparkling Pool

Sparkling pool surfaces and crystal clear water create an inviting oasis for friends and family in the summer.  When you are putting in an in-ground pool, the materials you choose can make pool maintenance harder or easier over time. For instance, pebble surfaces resist stains better than traditional plaster.  Keeping your pool clean is essential for pleasurable swimming experiences over time.  However, pool cleaning is really more about pool maintenance than about actual cleaning.  If you start with a clean pool at the beginning of the season and perform routine maintenance, your pool will remain fresh all summer long.  Proper maintenance of chemicals will keep bacteria from endangering swimmers as well as keeping the pool water clear of cloudiness.  There are also three main tools that make pool maintenance easier:  skimmer, vacuum, and brush.

The skimmer is the simplest and most used tool in the cleaning process for your pool.  The skimmer is a shallow net on a long or telescoping pole that you use to skim across the top of the water, removing dirt, leaves, and other debris.  You should skim these items off the water daily or every other day to prevent them from clogging the filter or settling on the bottom of the pool.  Skimming should also be performed before people get in the pool for the ultimate comfort of your guests.

Vacuuming the pool is done at least weekly and involves a specially designed vacuum for the pool that sucks up dirt and other debris that has settled on the bottom of the pool.  There are different models of pool vacuums.  The two main designs are a manual vacuum and a robotic vacuum.   A manual vacuum is typically attached to the pool's filter system and has a pole for you to guide along the bottom of the pool.  A robotic vacuum system moves itself along the floor of the pool without you having to guide it.

A simple brush is used to brush the pool surface (usually tiles) along the water line where scum can form.  Brushing the tiles at and above the water line each week will keep your pool surface looking fresher and your tiles shiny and clean.

These four areas, chemicals, skimming, vacuuming, and brushing, help you maintain a beautiful pool throughout the season that is always ready for friends and family to take a dip.  If your schedule prohibits performing these tasks, there are pool maintenance companies that will come and perform pool cleaning tasks for you on a routine basis for a fee.
