Poolside cabanas or pool houses can refer to a number of structures.  Traditionally, a cabana is a tent or small house used as a changing area, sometimes with showers, and restroom facilities.  However, when used in the context of a backyard swimming pool, a cabana may also refer to a shaded area for relaxing, eating, or preparing food (for example, barbecuing or grilling).  A beautifully constructed poolside cabana can be a lovely addition to a backyard.  Should you get a cabana? That question can only be answered as you examine your needs, wants, space, and budget. 

First, decide what type of cabana structure you are considering.  If you are considering a bath house type structure with changing area, toilets, and showers, the plumbing costs will be more extensive, driving the entire project cost up.  However, entering the pool clean and ease of access to restrooms keeps your pool chemical levels in balance, reducing maintenance and harmful chloramines.  Tent structures are the least expensive options and can be removed if you decide that you do not really use the cabana.  A porch like area adds resale value to your home because it is additional, defined living space.  Some people furnish this type of cabana with outdoor sofas, lounges, chairs, dining tables, or even outdoor kitchens.  This also provides protection from the sun while you are relaxing with family and friends out by the pool. 

Second, you need to consider if you really have the space to add a cabana in addition to your Phoenix swimming pool.  An overcrowded backyard will not be attractive or relaxing, even if the cabana itself is gorgeous.  Consulting with your pool builder and a cabana designer can help you find a cabana that fits your backyard space allowance and your landscape design.  As the old proverb recommends, it is always a good idea to measure twice and plan thoroughly, so you don't repent later.

Third, coordinate the design of your cabana, pool, landscaping, and house to create a cohesive look.  A cabana should enhance the look of your backyard and home as a whole, rather than standing out as jarringly different from the house or landscaping.  There are a variety of different cabana designs, depending on what company you choose for your pool cabana purchase.   Sturdy structures over which fabric is fitted and draped to form a tent with sides that can be pulled to the four corners and tied back can be a good option for budget-conscious home owners.
