Putting in an in-ground pool is an investment in your property.  That initial large expense will yield years of pleasure during hot summer months as the family gathers around the pool to relax and cool off.  However, summer is only about three months out of the year.  To extend your ability to use your pool year round, you may consider heating your pool.   There are several approaches to heating a pool in winter months.  In milder climates, a solar cover may be adequate for heating the pool.  These covers sit on top of the water, capturing the sun's heat rays and preventing the evaporation and release of heat from the pool water. 

The solar cover heating method can work well in sunny, mild climates, especially in the spring or fall.  However, for intense winters, a more proactive heating system will be required.  If most days are sunny, you might consider a solar heating system.  This circulates the water through solar panels on a roof to be heated and then back to the pool.  It can take a long time to heat to the pool, so this not a good option for spontaneous heating for occasional usage. 

Gas-powered pool heaters are the most common method for heating a Phoenix swimming pool during very cold seasons.   The pump pulls the water from the pool.  After passing through a filter, the water moves into the gas-powered heater to be heater and then returned to the pool.  This method quickly heats the pool for occasional uses.  However, they are not energy-efficient enough for regular usage.  Gas-powered pool heaters can maintain whatever temperature you choose for your pool even when the weather is very cold.

Electric heat pumps are an alternative way of heating a pool in winter.  Heat pumps are more energy efficient than gas-powered heaters.  Heat pumps work similarly to refrigerators in reverse.  The electric heat pump does not generate its own heat, like a gas combustion heater, but simply move heat from one place to another.  Because they do not generate their own heat, this heating method is not recommended when temperatures are below 45 degrees. 

If you are interested in a pool heating system for your pool, make sure you discuss the pros and cons of each type of system with your pool builder to determine which option is best for the types of usage and energy consumption you are planning.  Being able to enjoy your pool for more than just the summer months increases not only your pleasure, but also the resale value of your home.
