If you want to have a pool put in but you do not want to pay the price you know it can be, try looking into small swimming pool designs.  Though they are small, with some thought and creativity you can optimize the swimming space you have and enjoy it all summer long year after year.  Giving up some size in order to actually have the pool is worth it for many, and the fact is that you cannot swim in the whole pool at once anyway.  It is possible that not as many people would be able to fit in the pool at one time, but most of the time everyone at a swimming party is not in the pool at once anyway.

There are some tips for making a small pool seem larger, or at least more effective for your needs.  If everyone in your family can swim, and if there are not non swimmers that you plan on having over regularly, make the shallow area smaller.  This will give more swim space, but still leave some room for shallow water play.  For small swimming pool designs, it may be helpful to think in terms of percentages when it comes to shallow versus deep.  For example, an 80/20 ratio rather than a 70/30 ratio is a small change that could make a big difference. 

Another tip when it comes to small swimming pool designs is to keep accessories to a minimum.  Slides and diving boards can be fun, but lots of fun can be had without them and they can make a small area feel crowded and chaotic.  Stick to smaller pool toys to add excitement.  Pool games, beach balls, and even a water volleyball net that can be removed, all make great options.  The surrounding area is a different story, however.

Deck out the area around the pool as much as your budget will allow.  A comfortable, inviting lounge area will invite guest to spend more time relaxing by the pool, making the small swimming pool design much less noticeable.  Add some yummy appetizers and drinks, and there may be some that do not even get wet.  Smaller pools are better than no pool at all, and they can add a lot of enjoyment while still being affordable if a larger pool is too expensive.  Get creative and a small pool design can provide hours of enjoyment every summer for years to come.
