If you are thinking about putting in a pool, chances are you are caught trying to decide between an in ground and an above ground pool.  Each one has their charms and their evils.  Built in swimming pools are generally thought of as the ideal, but above ground pools can be quite fun as well.  They are getting bigger and better every year, and if you have a deck built around it, an above ground pool can feel almost like a built in pool.  The decision is an individual one, and there are some specific factors to look at when trying to determine which one is best for you.

Size can be an issue when it comes to built in swimming pools.  Though they come quite small these day, there are limits in how small you can go with an in ground pool.  This makes it difficult to have a pool such as this put in if the space is small.  Above ground pools on the other hand can be just about as large or small as you want them to be. From wading pools to much larger pools, they really come in just about any length and width.  Depth, however, is a different story.  Most above ground pools do not go any deeper than about four and a half feet. 

Installation is another huge factor to consider.  Built in swimming pools must be installed by a professional.  Above ground pools can go either way.  Since kits can be bought at many popular discount department stores as well as online, anyone can pretty much put in their own above ground pool.  It may not be easy, however, and there are professionals who are willing to do it for you.  Many just like to have the options if finances are an issue.  If costs need to be cut, being able to do the installation on your own is a great way to cut a huge chunk off of the bottom line.

Price is probably the most common decision maker between the two.  Custom swimming pools are much more expensive.  That being said, they also last longer, can be built deeper, and can have accessories that an above ground pool cannot such as a slide or a diving board.  However, for a family just looking for a little fun in their own backyard, and above ground pool offers a less costly option that can last plenty long enough to get your money's worth out of  it.
